If you are looking for empathy, compassion, kindness, hope, and practical tools for living with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), this book will help inspire you on your journey to recovery. In 1982, author James Callner suffered a devastating mental breakdown and the onset of severe OCD. He was hospitalized for six weeks. He felt broken, lost, and terrified about what was happening to his life. He felt trapped with no way out. But there was a way out … This hopeful and inspirational memoir is warm and casual and shares his recovery process. His care was multifaceted, including hospitalization, cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure response prevention therapy, and an array of innovative approaches. With compassion, empathy, humor, and wisdom, James chronicles his more than three decades of getting the right help while living with OCD. He found that OCD robbed him of trust and infused him with fears and phobias about people, places, and things and debilitating anxiety. He simply didn’t trust life. He regained that trust by using helpful tools to reclaim his power—to trust himself again. In this book, he shares those tools to help with your recovery. This is a memoir and a self-help book for anyone who struggles with OCD. As James Callner often reminds people with OCD, “There is always hope.” *The author requests that you write a short review if you purchase his book.

It a Matter of Trust Hope Solutions for OCD and How I Got Better James Callner Books

I found this book fascinating. It was hard to put down. It is a very personal account of someone who had suffered greatly from OCD, yet by taking one step at a time and using many different tools and therapy, he is able to lead a full, loving, productive life. He now spends his time sharing what worked for him and inspiring others to have hope and trust. Though I personally do not have OCD, I know others who do, and I plan to "gift" this book to others. There are inspirational quotes from many different sources from Mother Teresa to Eckhart Tolle to Leo Buscaglia. I loved the non-judgemental tone of the book. I felt like I was reading a book written by a friend sharing honestly about his struggles. Well done!

It a Matter of Trust Hope Solutions for OCD and How I Got Better James Callner Books Reviews

I am so very glad to have this insight into this very personal journey with such an up close and very candid memoir into their road to recovery. This insight brings more compassion and knowledge into this very transparent illness. An illness that can easily be brushed off as something less that what it is. An illness that has brought the word "OCD" into popular culture, without the true knowledge of what that means to someone who suffers from it and family who want to be supportive.
This memoir is an easy read that is personable, honest and heartfelt. It is full of anecdotes, helpful tips, life-lessons and and tools to add to anyone's toolbox, whether suffering or working through understanding this illness. These life-lessons are transferable to anyone navigating life with or without this illness and the challenges it brings.
"Progress not perfection" is a mantra I am taking away from this book, as well as the power of honesty. Reading this book, changed my perception and understanding of this illness. Thank you Jim, for your honesty, bravery and candor with the heartfelt mission to help educate, demystify the stigma and steer readers to the healthy road to recovery.
As someone like myself who has been challenged with OCD for many years I found this book refreshing and a must read for those with OCD.
It is a very sincere memoir from someone who have been fighting OCD for many years. Very motivational for those starting treatment to understand that recovery is possible.
I purchased this book for a dear friend who has spent so much of her life suffering the agonizing demands of OCD. Well, I had to read it for myself. And, wow, I now have even greater respect for her journey. Even though I’m not plagued with OCD myself, strangely, I found I related to so many parts of this book!

James Callner truly exemplifies ‘chutzpah’ in this touching, tender, insightful (and often funny) record of living his life mindfully, embracing his OCD. ‘OCD is a disorder where you are so alone with your thoughts and fears that it can be overwhelming at best, crippling at worst, and virtually unexplainable to those who are not afflicted by it.’ (page 145)

Through out his book you will feel connected, seen, not alone, and mostly, you’ll find a new strength to learn to live with the ‘monkey mind’ cycle of fears that plague OCD sufferers. Perhaps one of his greatest insights is that of ‘Thought Replacement’…. Rather than battling fear-based and destructive OCD thoughts, Callner lays out a road map to literally change that brain chemistry, to differentiate between OCD thoughts and reality.

From lessons from ‘The Course in Miracles’ to practicing daily meditation and mindfulness, Callner recognizes there are only tow emotions love and fear. Throughout this book you will find Callner to be pretty big on trusting, compassion, choosing thoughts of love, and yes, even LAUGHTER! And you’ll find Hope!

This book is both an insightful ‘how to’ book and an endearing memoir. Be prepared to be inspired while learning to live with OCD. His last words “In this moment, I can do it. I will do it. I am capable…because you are.”

Thank you James Callner for pushing through and writing this book. You are healing so many. Thank you for touching my heart. You are a blessing.
I'm delighted to learn all the techniques and guidelines this book has to offer to folks with anxiety, worry and basic 'distrust' of the world. Though I do not have diagnosed OCD, I certainly can make use of tips like using someone else's brain; moving my body; and thought replacement.to help me get through anxious times. Thank you Jim for the gift of this book.
This book would be a comfort to anyone with OCD. James Callner's plain and simple wisdom and advice for managing OCD is compassionate, hopeful, and easy to understand. I now know more about the disorder, and have more tools and tips to handle it than ever before. Highly recommended.
I highly recommend this book for anyone with OCD or for a friend / family member who would like to understand and help someone with OCD. Jim shares his own very personal experience with OCD and I found myself relating to many aspects of his suffering, but his tips in overcoming OCD could be applied to any subtype of OCD. I've read many excellent books on OCD and this book gave me new ways of thinking that I will apply to my own recovery. It's an easy read and will educate you fully on what OCD is and what you can do to get your life back from its grip.
